Our next meeting will be in the The Discovery Museum on Blandford Square, Newcastle upon Tyne. It will begin at 12:00 (noon), to end two or three hours later, on Saturday 4th of July, 2009 which follows our regular pattern of the first Saturday each month. You can find us in the classroom on the ground floor.

Linux Format magazine are wishing us all the best for our birthday, and have sent us some magazines. We have a bunch of their OpenOffice.org special, which features loads of articles and tutorials on our favourite office suite. We also have a bunch of this year's February issue, which headlines a big article on virtualisation. There are enough to go around, and I'll be bringing these to the meeting on the 4th. Anybody who wants one can have one. And then there will be cake! These don't have the DVD with them, but we'll be making various distributions available at the meeting to anybody who wants them.

The beginning of July marks ten years since the founding of Tyneside LUG. We'll be marking this with cake, at our next meeting. In fact, there is likely to be much cake. Ten years! We're old! Watch this space for further events. There might be an evening in a pub, or ten pin bowling. Join us on the general mailing list with suggestions!

This is the new venue for our June meeting. Cookies is a wide ranging shop, Intenet cafe, and Art Gallery - something for everyone. Cookey's main focus is now being an all-round computer centre with a shop, Internet cafe, Training facilities and technical support services. They are there for both before and after you purchase just like a true local retailer should be! They sell, various computer accessories, upto netbooks, laptops and desktops.
They even sell Linux net books too. Matthew the owner also provides computer training and help with Windows or Linux pc's.

Just a quick mention to let anyone know, that we will be having a Social get together for May's meeting at the Black Lion pub in Hereford. Dates are being finalised, but will occurred next week, probably on the Tuesday 19th May.

I will post more details, when we confirm the exact date.

I managed to upgrade to a T-Mobile G1 phone in the weekend, I say phone but really its the closest I've seen a phone come to a computer with a phone stuck on it. Convergence is a reality, not a dream any more.

Why do I mention it on here ? Because it runs the Android operating system, using Linux kernel 2.6.27. The operating system is very polished, and I would think gives a very positive impression on using an Android Google phone.

At this event we have the following speakers/features:

• Peter Brownell and David O'Dwyer built a scalable server infrastructure to host Schoolofeverything.com using (Drupal on Debian on) Amazon's EC2 cloud to be able to scale with growth - without the up-front expense. Did they find the switch from hardware servers to virtual machines a welcome move?
  


• Shaun McDonald (CloudMade) discovered OpenStreetMap during his final year at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and has helped run field work in ever more exotic locations since. His talk will introduce the system architecture and data/tagging model. We will then learn the practicalities of the project and go out on our own mapping party of the local area before returning to refine/update our local map with the proceeds.
  

As usual, we shall decant to a nearby pub for drinks and food after the meeting.
