17th June - GLLUG Talk - Typesetting with Free Software Tools

Greater London LUG News - Wed, 02/06/2010 - 10:30
Date: Thursday, June 17th, 2010
Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm
Location: Univ of Westminster Campus

City/Town: London

The next talk is titled "Typesetting with Free Software Tools" and
will be given by Tethys.

After being introduced to the wonders of Unix at university,
Tethys was hooked. With the release of Linux a few years later,
he was able to use Unix at home as well, and has never looked
back. He has interests in digital typography, large system
design, and playing with LARTC. His career has alternated
between coding and sysadmin for various companies in various
industries. One of those was in the pre-press department of
a large newspaper group, where an interest in typesetting
became a profession for a while. He is currently at the
coding end of the spectrum, writing software for a small
company using statistical analysis to predict future trends.

We are returning to our previous venue at the University of
Westminster, in the Large Lecture Theatre. If people could arrive for
1900, ready for the talk to begin at 1930. At the end of the talk we
usually visit the pub for a few drinks, general chat and socialising.

Sean has a sign-in sheet organised on the day for people to sign so he
can get an idea of attendance.

Kent Lug at Mid Kent College

KentLUG News - Tue, 11/05/2010 - 12:58
date:  Sat, 2010-05-29 09:30

We hope to see lots of you coming along and we'll be putting up posters in the College and also letting the ICT departments know about it. Hopefully we'll get a bunch of interested students coming along to help swell our ranks.

The meeting will be from 10am to 1pm. Please sign in at reception were there will then be directions to our meeting room.

Currently the talks are David H on general what is open source and myself demoing an install of Lucid onto a desktop and talking briefly about dual booting, wubi and virtualisation options.

If anyone else would like to come forward with talks then that would be great.

I'm also going to grab as many devices as I can find that are running Linux and bring them along for a show and tell type table - if any one else has devices to add to this pile then that would be great.

On the actual day you will need to sign in with reception who will take your car reg and issue you with a pass - without that you won't be able to get through the doors.

If anyone has issues with transport please post to the list as a separate topic and hopefully we'll be able to sort out some car shares.

April HLUG Meeting - NEW VENUE!

Herefordshire LUG News - Sun, 18/04/2010 - 11:27

Our April HLUG meeting will be held in a new location we will be trying for the first time.

The meeting will be held at the recently opened new venue 'The Point 4' near the centre of Hereford, http://www.thepoint4.info, owned and used mainly by the Blind College but open to all. It's a very smart place, with excellent facilities but unknown as yet to many Herefordians.

You can see more pictures of the venue here http://www.thepoint4.co.uk/socialise.html

The next talk is titled "Wire Shark and the basics of network traffic monitoring." and will be given by Nahual Marisi and John Sharp.

We have a slight change of venue, we will still be meeting at the University of Westminster (Cavendish Campus), but in Room C1.04. If people could arrive for 1900, ready for the talk to begin at 1930. I will try and get some signs made up to direct people to room C1.04 Hopefully there will be a trip to a local pub for social and technical chit-chat.

I feel the "I'm going" email's were unpopular and Sean had a sign-in sheet organised on the day anyway. So I think we should stick people just turning up and signing in. (ie you don't have to email the list or me explicitly stating you are going, unless you really really want us to know.)
